enormous pressure on president obama and governor romney right now. we're asking debate watchers, those who watched the debate to the history books. tonight, just like we will after every upcoming debate, we're breaking it down, issue by issue. this means more talk from the candidate on a particular topic. looking at some of the totals, we'll show you what's going on. but, first, here are some of the highlights from the first presidential debate. >> what things would i cut from spending? first of all, i will eliminate all programs by this test. if they don't pass it. is the program so critical, it's worth boring money from china to pay for it? obama care is on my list. i apologize mr. president. jim, i'm sorry, i had stop the subsidy to pbs. i love big bird, like you too. but i won't keep on spending money to borrow money from china to pay for. i'll take programs that are currently good programs but could be run more efficiently at the state level and send them to state. and make government more efficient, cut back the number of employees, combine agencies and departments, cutbac

and undecided voters we polled according to wolf blitzer's sources. so does president obama himself even. mitt romney had a very good night last night and president obama did not. here's the headline in denver, where the debate was held and where this morning the hometown paper scores it round one, romney. the left-leaning slate.com's john dickerson calling it the best moment of mitt romney's campaign. obama supporter andrew sullivan calls it the president's worst public performance bar none of his campaign. "time" magazine's joe kline asked did the president send out his body double tonight. critical reviews across the board. it'she consensus and also the political reality now staring team obama in the face. there is also no denying that no matter who wins or loses a given debate, each side immediately tries to convince you and us that their candidate came out ahead. there's even that designated spin room, the one in denver, and yes, they actually call it that, the spin room. which is everyone's way of saying with a wink and a nod that we know that you know that we know that you kn

obama camp is probably somewhat grateful that you didn't. but if you did catch it, you may not be surprised by numbers like these. two-thirds of debate watchers polled by cnn and orc believe that mitt romney bested the president. that is the biggest win of any presidential debater since we first started asking the questions of that back in 1984. check out this number. 82% said that mitt romney did better than they expected, but only 1 in 10 said he did worse. as for the president's performance, 6 in 10 say that he did worse than expected. just 2 in 10 said he actually did better. cnn's dana bash joins me now with more about the stats and the sound bites and to borrow a line from our friend and our colleague james carville, the president wanted a conversation, but mitt romney showed up with a chain saw. how are things going within the various xamps today and how is everybody breaking this down? the narrative today. >> the narrative today is simply that, you know, going into yesterday, there were republicans talking about maybe it's time to put resources towards getting the senate b

for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead there, six-point lead in that one. the point to remember yet again here, game on in virginia. game on in florida with tonight's debate less than seven hours away. let's go straight to denver and to jim acosta. and, jim, does team romney, do they see the polls we ran through, is this a sign the race is tightening, is the wind in romney's sails, is it there going into tonight?

done entirely after the first debate, now showing a four-point obama lead, that's a statistical tie. it is a significant change from the seven to ten point lead the president enjoyed before the debate. new polling as well from sienna college that shows a statistical tie in pennsylvania. that's based on surveys done both before and after the debate and nationally in gallup's daily tracking poll which covers october 2nd through the 8th, mitt romney now holds a two-point edge. today, gallup shifted from registered to likely voters, which tends to favor republicans. that said, though, it is hard to find any evidence, any evidence that president obama escaped denver without at least some damage. the only question being how severe and how long-lasting. that seems hard to dispute. just as it's hard to dispute that prior to the debate, mr. romney was getting hammered in the polls. keeping them honest though, disputing or downplaying the obvious, that's what campaigns do on both sides. >> it's not going to be about the polls. i wouldn't put a lot of weight in any of these national polls for

the 7th, in other words, after the debate. that is a big swing from mid-september when president obama was ahead by eight. that was this afternoon, a short time ago, a poll running in the "detroit free press" shows the president's lead shrinking to just three points in michigan. mr. obama had a ten point lead there last month. mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, is in michigan tonight addressing a rally at oakland university in the town of rochester just outside detroit. the question tonight, if the mood of voters is changing here, could it also be a sign that it's changing in ohio as well, another key battleground state. the poll in the free press and the pew poll not the only good news for the romney forces. they got a big boost as well in gallup's tracking poll which shows a 47-47 tie among likely voters contacted on the 4th through the 6th. in pre-debate polling, mr. obama, president obama, led by five. now, as for today's pew poll, the obama campaign takes issue with the party make-up of people surveyed, saying it tilts republican compared to september. the romney campaign, on

seems expressly designed to score political points, the first, of a speech then-senator barack obama gave back in 2007. the daily caller bills it as "obama's other race speech," a barely recognizable obama. says lavr ishes praise on reverend wright, claims the government spends too much on suburbs, not enough on "our neighborhoods." earlier, we played the clip about where he praised jeremiah wright. and now the difference of the response of hurricane katrina to hurricane andrew. >> down in new orleans, there is a federal law called the stafford act. the local government has to give a match. here is the thing. when 9/11 happened in new york city, they waved the stafford act. forget that dollar you have to put in. here is $10. and that was the right thing to do. when hurricane andrew struck in florida, they said look at this devastation, don't expect you to put that money in. what's happening in new orleans? where is your dollar, where is your stafford act money? makes no sense. tells me the but let hasn't been taken out. tells me that somehow the people in new orleans, they don't care

first presidential debate, president obama and mitt romney will have the chance to press one another to answer questions that they themselves have been reluctant to answer. we'll run through some big ones, keeping them honest tonight. first, we've got some late polling. new cnn/orc numbers that show the race tightening. president obama still leads among likely voters 50% to 47% but that three-point gap is within the poll's margin of error. by comparison, just after the conventions, mr. obama got a four-point bounce to put him in the lead by six. the president's favorable rating meantime remains above the crucial 50% mark at 52%. mr. romney is close but still in negative territory at 49%. he enjoys an edge on handling the deficit and joblessness, but trails on virtually every other big issue, including medicare, taxes and foreign policy. keeping them honest, when it comes to some of those issues, both candidates have come up short either on specifics or credibility. issues like cutting taxes without ballooning the deficit or burdening the middle class. the romney campaign has been ask
